Warm Demander Teacher Workshops

Published in 2006, Dr. Ware’s “Warm Demander Pedagogy: Culturally Responsive Teaching that Supports a Culture of Achievement for African American Students” continues to be referenced by scholars and practitioners in the field of education (Delpit, 2012; Hammonds, 2015). Warm Demander Teacher Workshops have been expanded to support teachers who have a cultural or racial identity that differs from their students. These teachers are willing to do the work to achieve academic and social-emotional success in an inclusive class culture.

A teacher initiated this workshop when he stated:

“After several years in the classroom I feel I am a warm teacher, a positive presence who wants to make them feel welcomed, but not a demanding one. How do I push them, not go easy on them, show them I care and have high expectations for them?”

This sincere question initiated the creation of a customized training for a school that created growth for the entire school community. This workshop can be customized and facilitated for your school if the community desires to engage with students in ways that reduces the stress of unaddressed racial or cultural tension, effectively enacts high expectations, and creates a warm, safe and successful classroom and school climate for everyone.
